Vaughn Harshman Obituary

SALEM - Vaughn K. Harshman, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 10, 2024, at the age of 83. He spent his final moments at Auburn Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation in Salem, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born on September 15, 1940, in Columbus, Ohio, Vaughn was the son of the late Gerald W. and Margaret E. Schumacher Harshman. He grew up with a strong sense of duty and honor, which led him to serve his country with distinction as a combat engineer in the special forces, attaining the rank of E5 during the Vietnam era. He was elected Soldier of the Month on three separate occasions and received the honor of being a Purple Heart recipient.

After graduating from Salem High School in 1958, Vaughn went on to further his education at Kent State University where he graduated with an Associate Degree in Mechanical Engineering and dedicated himself to a career as a mechanical engineer. He worked diligently at DeBartolo Corporation and WD Partners, contributing significantly to the construction industry. His professional achievements were paralleled by his commitment to community service, as he devoted 15 and a half years to the Salem Fire Department, where his courage and selflessness were evident in every call to action.

Vaughn was an avid Ohio State fan and his passion for sports and mentorship shone brightly as he coached various teams in Salem. He took great joy in fostering the athletic abilities and sportsmanship of young athletes, including his own children, whom he supported wholeheartedly in their endeavors.

He enjoyed the times he spent hunting and fishing. His great sense of humor was a source of joy for all who knew him. Family beach trips, walking the dog, strolls through nature, and enjoying a game of golf were among his favorite activities. More than anything, Vaughn valued his family, and his role as a devoted husband, father and grandfather was the most treasured aspect of his life.

Vaughn leaves behind his devoted wife of 54 years, Billie (Hoffman) Harshman, whom he married on December 27, 1969. He was a proud father to Buffy Harshman, Jaris (Dan) Dickens, Ian Harshman, and Courtney (Andre Fleischer) Harshman-Fleischer; and grandchildren, Cody Dickens, Madison Dickens, Tyler Dickens, Kylie Skinner-Fleischer, Darin Fleischer and Aubrey Fleischer.

He was preceded in death by his grandson, Landon Fleischer; and his brother, Fred Harshman.
