Arlene Schwartz Obituary

SALEM - Arlene K. (Hasson) Schwartz, 78, was born on her family’s farm in rural Madison Township on July 31, 1946.

The daughter of the late Walter Barton Hasson and Doris Irene (Meek) Hasson, she attended West Point Elementary School and was a 1964 graduate of Beaver Local High School, a 1968 graduate of Bowling Green University, and earned a master’s degree from Youngstown State University.

Upon graduating from college, she began teaching in Salem City Schools, retiring in 1998. During that time, she met and married the love of her life, David K. Schwartz, and continued her education at Youngstown State, where she focused her studies on geography. In 1990, she was selected by the National Geographic Society to attend a four-week Summer Institute held at NGIS Headquarters in Washington D.C. Upon retirement from teaching, she worked throughout this region to pass on to other teachers what she had learned at the institute.

She is survived by her loving husband, David; her brother Walter and his wife Jian Hua; sister-in-law, Ginger Hasson; Ginger’s four sons and their families; brother-in-law, Barry, and his wife Becky and their children; brother-in-law, Joe, and his wife Susan and their children; and sister-in-law, Sandra (Nonnie) and her son.
