SALEM – On Monday, June 22, 2026, Heaven’s door opened for Betty Ilene Unger, age 85, who passed away at Salem Regional Medical Center from a short illness. She was born March 8, 1941, in Woodsfield, OH, daughter of the late Williard E. Smith and Hazel L. (Lockhart) Smith.

Betty attended First United Methodist Church. She worked as a press operator for 12 years at Ventra Plastics LLC and Memorial Building – Offices on Aging for three years.

Crocheting, crosswords, reading and working puzzles were her favorite pastimes.

Betty leaves behind two daughters, Rebecca Sue Crowe and Dorene Kaye Smith, both of Salem; sister, Thelma Poage; granddaughter, Lola (Marc) Finley of Salem, whom she raised; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and three great great-grandchildren.

Besides her parents, she was also preceded in death by a sister, Gladys V. Drotleff; brothers-in-law, Rudy Drotleff and Hank Poage; grandson, Brandon Stoffer, and granddaughter, Karley Steele.

Services will be held at a later date. She will be laid to rest at Grandview Cemetery.

Arrangements are being handled by Stark Memorial Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
