SALEM - Donald L. Cowan, a cherished member of the Salem community and a proud veteran, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 22, 2024, at the age of 97. Born on January 20, 1927, in Salem, Ohio, Donald was the son of the late C.A. Cowan and Mabel (Householder) Cowan. His life was a testament to his enduring spirit and dedication to his family, his country, and his community.
Donald's early years in Salem laid the foundation for a life full of service and hard work. He answered the call of duty as a young man, serving his country with honor in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After his military service, he returned to his hometown, where he became a respected truck driver for Pacific Intermountain Express. His work ethic and reliability were hallmarks of his character, earning him the respect of all who knew him.
He was a Methodist by faith, living his beliefs through his actions and his kindness towards others.
Donald's sense of camaraderie and his dedication to fellow service members were evident in his active involvement with the Salem Elks Lodge and the Salem VFW Post #892.
Family was the cornerstone of Donald's life.
He is survived by his loving son, Andy (Cindy) Cowan.
Donald was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jean (Blake) Cowan, with whom he shared 74 years of marriage filled with love, laughter, and mutual support. He was also preceded in death by his two daughters, Terry Webb and Vicki Cowan, his sister, Mary Lou Cook, and his brother, Jeff Cowan.
A funeral service to honor the life of Donald L. Cowan will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 26, 2024, at Grandview Cemetery Chapel. He will be laid to rest at Grandview Cemetery.
