Donald Hurd Obituary

SALEM - Donald Edgar Hurd, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, left this world peacefully early on Friday morning January 31, 2025, at the age of 83, in Salem, Ohio. Born in Saratoga Springs, New York, on July 12, 1941, to Edgar and Onna (Henning) Hurd, Don carried the torch of his family's love and values throughout his life.

Don's journey was one marked by devotion and joy. He attended Valparaiso University, where he not only received a solid education but also met Carol (Garrett) Hurd, the love of his life. Their nearly 61-year marriage was a testament to their unshakeable bond and mutual respect. Though Carol preceded him in death on June 20, 2024, their love story continues to inspire their family.

A loving father, Don is survived by his daughters, Lisa Bailey and her husband Richard of Lisbon, and Rebecca Gerhardt and her husband Berry of Knoxville, Tennessee. His legacy of love extends to his grandchildren, Jordon Bailey, Garrett Bailey, Robert Nash, Donald Nash, and Laura Masarik, as well as his great-grandchildren, Vitani and Anna. He was predeceased by his grandson, Michael Nash, but his memory will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew him.

Don's professional life was that of a skilled Software Engineer and Systems Analyst until his retirement in 2003. His intellectual curiosity and problem-solving abilities were not only evident in his career but also in his personal interests. He enjoyed fishing at the shore, delving into genealogy, building model rockets, and immersing himself in the worlds of science fiction and spy novels.

Community involvement was a cornerstone of Don's life. He was an active member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Salem, where he found spiritual fulfillment and fellowship. His commitment to service was further demonstrated through his roles on the Lutheran West Athletic Boosters Club and the advisory council board of residents in Fort Myers. Donald's earlier years as a Boy Scout Leader reflected his adventurous spirit and his desire to guide and inspire the youth.

Described by those who knew him as loving, kind, and adventurous, Don was a man who embraced the beauty of life's journey. He relished in the simple pleasure of day trips, exploring new places, and creating memories with his family. Above all, his main priority was the well-being and happiness of his wife and family, a noble endeavor that he fulfilled with grace and dedication.

Don's life was a tapestry of meaningful relationships, steadfast love, and generous service. His warmth, wisdom, and gentle humor will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

As we bid farewell to Donald Edgar Hurd, we celebrate a life well lived and a legacy of love that will continue to shine brightly in the lives of his family and friends. His story does not end here, for it is carried on in the hearts of those he touched, the lessons he taught, and the laughter he shared. Rest in peace, dear Don, until we meet again.

A funeral service will be held at a later date.
