Gary Goddard Obituary

SALEM - Gary A. Goddard, a lifelong resident of Salem, and a beacon of kindness in the community, passed away on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, at Salem Regional Medical Center. Gary was born on April 19, 1963, to the late Charles W. Goddard and Shirley A. (Moore) Goddard, whose values and love shaped him into the remarkable man many had the privilege to know.

He was a proud brother to Drew Goddard of Strongsville, OH, and a cherished uncle and great-uncle to his five nephews and one niece—Tony, Devin and his wife Amber, D.J., Nicole, Zion, and Zaire—as well as his three great-nephews and nieces, Aleeyah, Sebastian, and Ophelia.

A true product of Salem, Gary graduated from Salem High School with the class of 1981. His thirst for knowledge and passion for communication led him to Youngstown State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in communication. Not one to rest on his laurels, he pursued a second bachelor's degree in education, paving the way for his lifelong career as an educator.

Gary dedicated his professional life to the Salem City School District, where he was much more than a teacher. He was a mentor, a friend, and a guiding light for countless students throughout his tenure. His voice was a familiar sound at Salem High School sporting events, where he served as the announcer for football, basketball, baseball, and volleyball games, his enthusiasm never failing to ignite the crowd. Gary also kept meticulous stats for the teams, demonstrating his love for the games and the students he supported.

Those who knew Gary would describe him as the epitome of kindness and friendliness. His ability to connect with others, to listen and to offer a word of encouragement, made him an unforgettable presence in the lives of those he touched. He approached life with a gentle spirit and an open heart, making a lasting impact on his family, friends, and the students he so dearly loved.

Gary's legacy is one of love, laughter, and the pursuit of knowledge. He instilled in his students the importance of communication, not only as a subject to be studied but as a cornerstone of human connection. His dedication to education and the community of Salem will be remembered for generations to come.
