Berlin Center, Ohio- Gloria C. (Maibaum) Powers, 76, peacefully departed this life to her heavenly home on Friday, May 24, 2024, at Hospice of the Valley. She was born September 3, 1947, a daughter of the late Frederick and Hazel (Waters) Maibaum.
She was a 1966 graduate of Oneonta High School. She graduated top of her class from Albany Business College with an Associate Degree in Business Accounting in 1968. Gloria married her high school sweetheart and love of her life, Thomas J. Powers on April 6,1968. They were blessed with sons, John, Mike, and Jeff. Gloria enjoyed being her sons’ classroom mother, den mother, and sport team mother. She nurtured with amazing home cooked meals and gentle discipline reminders with the snap of a wet dish cloth. The family enjoyed camping, boating, fishing, hiking, and the great outdoors. Once her boys were grown, Gloria went on to pursue her love of caring for the elderly. After being an in-home personal aide to many who were sick and homebound, Gloria proceeded to graduate as “The Best Nursing Student” in her class from The Hannah E. Mullins School of Practical Nursing as an LPN in 1996. She took pride in her work as a compassionately devoted nurse to the residents at Copeland Resident Health Office. Tom and Gloria found peace in nature as they enjoyed the home Tom built for them out in the country, as well as camping in their fifth wheel at various campgrounds across the country. Delighted with the sights and sounds of the barn Tom lovingly built by hand, Gloria enjoyed daily visits with her beloved horse, Rio, and many barn cats. Gloria was blessed to be “Grammie” to eight grandchildren. She never missed making an extra special, personalized birthday cake for each of their birthdays every year. She loved to attend any event her grandchildren were involved in and soaked up their smiles. Gloria was known for her love of plants and flowers. She enjoyed tinkering in the greenhouse Tom built for her and loved giving starter plants and flowers to family and friends.
Gloria will be missed by her loving husband of 56 years, Thomas J. Powers; sons, John (Cheryl) Powers of West Middlesex, PA , Mike (Monica) Powers of Sandusky, Ohio, and Jeff (Erin) Powers of Alliance, Ohio; grandchildren, Caitlin, Nathan (Tess), Olivia (Clay), Holly, Bryson, Hunter, Connor, and Spencer; extra-granddaughter, Tawny; sister, Dolly (Hazel) Sousa; sisters-in-law, Kathy Powers, Cheri Powers, and Sabrina Powers; brother-in-law, Tim Powers, and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Gloria was preceded in death by her mother-in-law, Jane Cornell; Stepfather-in-law, Jim Cornell, brothers-in-law, Terry Powers, and Bill Powers; and nephew, Michael Bell. Gloria is also united with her beloved son, Thomas Jr., who died at birth and is now in her loving arms.
Family and friends will gather later this summer for a celebration of life in Gloria’s honor. Gloria was a non-denominational Christian who enjoyed visiting several churches, particularly, the Damascus Friends Church.
The family asks that you take a moment and relish in any flowers and plants life brings your way to remember Gloria, pray for Tom in her absence, and give glory to God.
