Hazel Nicholas Obituary

Youngstown - Hazel Louise Nicholas, 98, transitioned home on Tuesday afternoon, February 20, 2024, at her home, with her loved ones at her bedside.

Hazel was born on February 17, 1926, at home on the family farm, daughter of the late Charles and Nellie (Wilms) Sheen and was the last of their 11 children to be called home.

Hazel attended Greenford schools and had worked at various jobs around the Salem and Youngstown area. She retired as a prep cook with the Arby's restaurant food chain and had also worked for the Timberlane's as a waitress and Aldom’s Diner in Salem as well as a seamstress with Zoodles in Liberty Twp. Hazel was a leader for Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts. She was adored by many who knew her and was commonly known as Grandma Hazel by many of her scouts and her grandchildren’s friends. Hazel loved to tend to her flower garden, bird watching, small crafts and bake cookies, breads and cakes especially during the holidays. She also loved to sew and crochet blankets for gifts to family. Many of her projects were exhibited at the Canfield Fair or donations to Red Hawk American Indian Society.

Hazel leaves three children, Tricia Floyd of Youngstown, Carol (Michael) Odem of Salem, Randy Nicholas of Austintown; 18 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and great great grandchildren

Besides her parents, Charles and Nellie Sheen, Hazel was preceded in death by her first husband, Elmer Pollock; her second husband, Donald Rinard; her third husband, Randall Nicholas as well as two sons; Richard Rinard, Elmer "Ike" Pollock and wife Sally Pollock; two infant daughters, Sandra and Sharon; and 10 siblings; Donald Sheen, Blanche Dudley, Margeret Delp, Ruth Schmidt, Ester Wilson, Carl Sheen, George Sheen, Paul Sheen, Iona Cloyd, and Charles Sheen.

A memorial service celebrating Hazel's life will be held at the Stark Memorial Funeral Home in Salem at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 9, 2024. Calling hours prior to the service will be from 10-11 a.m. at the funeral home. A repast will take place from 2-6 p.m. Saturday at the Holy Temple Church of God In Christ, 161 Early Rd., Youngstown, Ohio 44505.

Those wishing to assist the family with Hazel’s final expenses may call the funeral home at 330-332-5139 to make a donation. In lieu of flowers or trees, the family will be planting their own trees in Hazel’s memory.
