SALEM - James A. Forney, 96, passed away peacefully on December 7, 2024, at his home following a brief illness and surrounded by his family.
Born on December 11, 1927, in Campbell, Ohio, James lived a life marked by dedication to his family, service to his country, and commitment to his community.
After graduating from East Palestine High School in 1945, he furthered his education at The Ohio State University, earning a bachelor's degree in 1951. James proudly served his country during the Korean War as a member of the United States Army. He went on to have a successful career as the store manager of Bearings, Inc. in Youngstown, where he dedicated 32 years before retiring.
James was preceded in death by his loving wife, Donna Jean (Craig) Forney; parents, Albert L. Forney and Minnie L. (Beight) Forney; children, Denise and Eric Forney; sister, Helen Ceroli, and brother, Andrew Nagy. He leaves behind his devoted daughter, Laura (Mark) Schmidt, a grandson, a great-granddaughter, and a legacy of love and resilience.
A man of faith, James was an active member of the Salem First Methodist Church. His involvement in various associations reflected his diverse interests and his commitment to fellowship. He was a member of the American Legion, Perry Masonic Lodge #185, Salem Chapter R.A.M. #94, Omega Council 44 Order of Amaranth, Knights Templar, Central Ohio Hot Jazz Society, and the New Orleans Jazz Club.
He was also a die-hard Buckeyes fan, attending as many football games as he could as a season ticket holder for many years. If not attending games at “The Shoe” he could be found watching the football and basketball team at home.
James's life was a testament to his strong values and his belief in the power of community. His warm presence and the memories he created will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Calling hours will be from 4:30-6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2024, at Stark Memorial Funeral Home. A Masonic Service will immediately follow at 6:30 p.m. with a funeral service led by Rev. Bruce Irwin beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
