HANOVERTON - James Earl Rice, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully in Salem, Ohio, on December 24, 2024. Born on April 6, 1950, in Berea, Ohio, to the late Earl and Zelda "Tootie" (Icenhour) Rice. Despite the challenges presented by his brain aneurysm over two decades ago, he continued to engage in life with enthusiasm and resilience.
James was a proud 1968 graduate of West Branch High School. His work ethic shone brightly through his dedicated 30 years as an electrician at GM Lordstown, retiring in 2002.
He shared his life with his wife, Sheryl (Snyder) Rice, after tying the knot on August 28, 1998. James was a devoted father to Angela (Kurt) Killingsworth of Warren, Joshua (Cristi) Rice of Texas, Rebecca Rice of Texas, Mike Murphy of Canton, Charleen (Gregg) Coffee, Steve (Michelle) Murphy, and Tom (Megan) Murphy all of Hanoverton. James's legacy includes his adored grandchildren: Grace, Owen, Noah, Oliver, Camila, Mateo, Nikkola, Devan, Emma, Garrett, Kennedy, Conner, Derek, Jayde, Michael, Dexter, Willow, and Rowan. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Gabriel Kirsch, and two brothers, David Rice and Michael Rice. His sister, Linda (Bill) Melzer of Sebring, and brother, Dennis (Karen) Rice of Homeworth, survive him, alongside two sisters-in-law, Bonnie Rice of Sebring and Penny Rice of Alliance.
James attended New Garden Methodist Church. His hobbies brought him joy and relaxation; he had a passion for collecting diecast airplanes and shaving mugs from his adventures at flea markets. More than anything, James found happiness in the company of his family. The simple pleasure of a shared Barq's root beer and laughter with his loved ones was his idea of perfection.
As per his wish, no services will be held, yet his memory will endure in the hearts of those who loved him.
The family extends their heartfelt appreciation to the staff of Salem North Healthcare and Dr. Jay Lugibihl for their exceptional care and compassion that greatly comforted James during his final days.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Gabriel’s honor to SIDS Network of Ohio at sids-network.org or to the New Garden Methodist Church, 7165 St. Rt. 9, Hanoverton, OH 44423.
Arrangements are being respectfully handled by Stark Memorial Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
