Margaret Works Gibbs

Salem- Margaret Works Gibbs passed away peacefully on December 24, 2025. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio on August 31, 1929, she was the beloved wife of Charles Gibbs. Margaret and Charles were united in marriage on July 1, 1950, at The First Presbyterian Church of Salem, Ohio, where they built a life together filled with faith, service, and community.
Margaret graduated from Cranbrook School, Kingswood, in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, and attended Sweet Briar College in Sweet Briar, Virginia. A lifelong member of The First Presbyterian Church in Salem, she served with distinction as both an Elder and Deacon. Her beautiful voice graced the choir for many years, and she shared her faith by teaching in the church youth program.
Margaret was an avid reader, an accomplished bridge player, and an active member of the Women's Association of The Salem Golf Club. She cherished her summers in Freedom, New Hampshire, a tradition she maintained throughout her life. Her commitment to her community was demonstrated through 40 years of service as a Trustee of The Salem Public Library and as President of The Memorial Fund. In 1996-1997, she opened her home as an American Field Service host mother to Eva Lunderquist of Sweden.
The daughter of Nelson and Harriette Works, Margaret was preceded in death by her husband Charles Gibbs and her daughter Emily Gibbs of Salem as well as four brothers: Nelson Works, Jr., The Reverend David Works, John Works III, and Drake Works, and two sisters: Nancy Fulton and Elizabeth Wilkins. She is survived by her children Charles Gibbs of Freedom, New Hampshire, Ellen Caruso of Canton, Ohio, and Margaret Hoople (David) of Falmouth, Maine, as well as her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services will be held on January 3rd at 11:30 a.m. at Stark Memorial Funeral Home in Salem, Ohio. There will be no calling hours. Guests may greet the family at 11:00 a.m. at Stark Memorial. A private burial will be held in Grandview Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Music Endowment Fund of First Presbyterian Church, 436 East Second Street, Salem, OH 44460, or to The Memorial Fund of The Salem Public Library, 821 East State Street, Salem, OH 44460.
