Margaret “Peggy” Fisher Obituary

SALEM - Margaret (Peggy) Fisher, 82, was called home to be with the Lord on Friday, August 8, 2020. Peggy was born June 26, 1938 in Barbertown, Ohio, daughter of the late Harry S. and Margaret (Jones) Bedore.

Peggy had a happy childhood growing up in Niles, Ohio. In her teen years, she moved to Liberty, Ohio where she graduated from Liberty High School in 1956. It was there she met her high school sweetheart, Robert Kohler, who she married in 1958. Peggy completed her bachelor's degree in education in 1960 from Youngstown State University.  After graduating, she became a stay at home mom and was active in the Wedgewood Garden Club. When her youngest was in school, she began to substitute teach at Real Life Christian Academy. She later worked at the Yum Yum Tree in Salem where she loved making the gift arrangements and setting up store displays. Peggy began her second career as a licensed social worker at Hutton Nursing Home later known as Essex of Salem. Social work was her true calling and she was a strong advocate for families by helping them navigate through the medical, legal and logistical challenges of elder care.  She served in this capacity full time until 2011 and continued working part time until the age of 80 when she could no longer work due to visual impairment.

Peggy loved all things flowers and was an avid flower gardener and arranger. She also loved miniature doll houses, fancy dolls and collecting antique compacts.  She shared her compact collection with other groups and had them on display at the Salem Public Library.

As a born-again Christian, Peggy shared her faith and love for the Lord.  Her gift in life was being a good listener and had a special way of counseling family and friends through their difficulties. She attended Greenford Christian Church and formerly attended Real Life Assembly of God. Peggy married her second husband Ulysses S. Fisher in 1998 and often referred to this time in her life as the most peaceful and wonderful years.

Her home was her refuge and after a stay in the nursing home we were able to bring her back to the only place she ever wanted to be. She passed peacefully with her children by her side. A special thank you to her wonderful caregivers Heather, Katelyn, Autumn, Paula and Missi who became our second family over the past year. We would also like to thank the best neighbors anyone could hope for. Thank you to Vic Carrocce, Fred and the late Judy Weingart for 30-plus years of shared friendship and always being there to lend a hand.

She is survived by her husband, Ulysses S. Fisher; daughters, Michelle (Tom) Kelly of Salem, Janiene (Tom) Stafford of Sanford, FL; a son, R. Mark Kohler of Minerva; daughter-in-law, Judy Kohler; stepdaughter, Amy Reed of Columbus; stepson, David (Melony) Fisher of Homeworth; 11 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

For anyone wishing to make a memorial contribution, there were two missions that were dear to her heart, The Big Reach at Greenford Christian Church, P.O Box 53, Greenford, OH 44422 and Operation Blessing Water Well Program, 977 Centerville Turnpike, Virginia Beach, VA  23463.

Private graveside services were held on Monday, August 10, 2020 at Grandview Cemetery.
