SALEM - Marian L. Christensen, 98, passed away Friday, April 10, 2026, at Brookdale Senior Living in Salem.

Marian was born on October 4, 1927, in Hughesville, Pennsylvania, the daughter of the late Chester and Mary (Babcock) Smith. She grew up surrounded by the values of faith, family, and hard work that would shape the course of her long and meaningful life. Marian was a graduate of Hughesville High School, Class of 1945, and went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in 1949 from Cleveland Bible College, now Malone University.

On December 14, 1951, Marian married Walter B. Christensen, and the two were blessed with 50 years of marriage until Walter’s passing on October 19, 2002. Together, they made their home in Salem, where they raised their sons, David and Rodney, in a loving, faith-filled household.

Marian lived her life for God, family, and her passion for music, beautifully intertwining all three as a member of Salem First Friends Church. She served the church faithfully as a Sunday School teacher, choir member, and pianist for more than 35 years. Her music became a cherished part of worship and fellowship, and her presence was felt in the hearts of those who heard her play. She also shared her talents at East Goshen Friends Church, where she played piano part-time. In addition to her church service, Marian was a member of the Christian Women’s Club.

For more than 50 years, Marian shared her love of music through private piano lessons, teaching countless students and passing along not only musical skill but also patience, encouragement, and joy. Even while living at Brookdale Senior Living for the past three years, she continued to share her gifts with residents and staff, still playing beautifully just several months ago.

Marian’s interests extended beyond music, and she found joy in oil painting as well as tending to her flower and vegetable gardens. She was known as a loving, faith-filled, and passionate woman whose gentle nature and enduring devotion left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her.

Marian leaves to carry on her legacy, her son, Rodney (Mary Beth) Christensen of Salem; three grandchildren, Brian (Saida) Christensen, Brittany Christensen, and Kyle (Rachel) Rhodes; and one great-granddaughter, Eleanor, who brought her so much joy.

In addition to her parents and husband, Marian was joyfully reunited with her son, David, who passed away in 1983, and her siblings, Breta Miller, Pete Smith, Helen Montague, Grace Ryan, Charles Smith, Rev. Earl Smith, Donald Smith, and Margaret Smith.

Family and friends will be received from 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, April 14, 2026, at Stark Memorial Funeral Home, 1014 E. State St., Salem, and again from 10-10:45 a.m., Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at Salem First Friends Church, 1028 Jennings Ave., Salem, where a funeral service will follow at 11 a.m., with Pastor Pete Fowler officiating. Burial will be at Highland Memorial Park in Beloit.

Memorial tributes may take the form of contributions in Marian's name to Salem First Friends Church.
