SALEM - Marilyn Spier, passed away peacefully at the age of 83 on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, at Lexington Place in Salem, where she had been a resident for the past year.
Born on May 27, 1941, in Berlin Center, to parents Paul Baker and Kathleen (Girard) Baker Hippely. Marilyn lived a life that was fiercely independent and as vibrant and warm as her personality. Marilyn's journey was filled with the joy of family, the satisfaction of a fulfilling career, and the comfort of her many interests.
She spent two decades as a dedicated relief operator in the press department of Worthington Industries, from where she retired in 2003. Outside of work, Marilyn was an active member of the Salem bowling league, where she enjoyed the friendly competition and camaraderie. Her passion for sports extended to being an avid fan of the Cleveland Indians, sharing in the highs and lows of the team with equal fervor.
Marilyn was also well known for her love of playing BINGO, a pastime that brought her immense joy and excitement. Marilyn's interests also included quieter pursuits, such as savoring her morning coffee while reading the newspaper and solving crossword puzzles. These simple pleasures were a cherished part of her daily routine. However, it was the time spent with her family and her sister’s family at the lake that Marilyn treasured the most. Those moments of togetherness and the memories created are everlasting. The two lived most of their lives in very close proximity raising their kids together, all combined six boys and Penny Jo whom they all referred to as sis.
She is lovingly remembered by her family, who were the heart and soul of her existence. Marilyn was a devoted mother to her sons, Russell R. Welling Jr. of Hampton, VA, and Gary Welling of Salem, and her daughter, Penny May and her husband Kenny of Salem. She was a cherished grandmother to six grandchildren, Dillon Rhodes and his wife Cheyenne, Katelyn Rhodes, Kellie Philbrick and her husband Ryon, Katie Uslenghi and her husband Todd, Jessica Braxton and her husband Antoine, and Nicholas Welling. Marilyn's joy was further multiplied by her six great-grandchildren, Parker, Rylee, Memphys, Khloe, Denver, and Jayce. Each of them brought a unique light into her life. She will also be remembered by her two brothers, Duane "Butch" Baker of Ocala, FL and Paul "Mickey" Baker of Salem.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, Paul Baker and Kathleen Baker - Hippely; her stepmother, Evelyn Baker; her stepfather, Joseph Hippely; her brother, Forest Baker, and her sister, Chiquita "Libby" Brown. She was also predeceased by her beloved daughter-in-law, Vicky Welling, and her sisters-in-law, Ruth Ellen Baker and Shirley Baker and her brother in-law, Bill “Brownie” Brown and also by Russell Welling Sr. the father of her children.
Marilyn's life was one of connection and affection, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those she touched. Though she has departed from this world, the warmth of her presence will be felt forever. Her family takes comfort in knowing that she is now reunited with her loved ones who passed before her. The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to the Lexington Place staff and special friends she met for their kindness and compassion shown to Marilyn during her time there. Following Marilyn's wishes there are no calling hours with a memorial service to be held at a later date.
