Merle Poynter Obituary

LISBON - Merle L. Poynter, 80, passed away February 6, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love and commitment. Born in Lisbon August 10, 1944, Merle grew into a man of strong faith and patriotism, embodying the values of hard work and devotion to family throughout his life.

Merle's life journey was rich with love and companionship, notably marked by his marriage to his beautiful bride, Carol (Seevers) Poynter, on April 22, 1963. The loving couple cherished 61 years of marriage, during which they built a nurturing home and raised a family grounded in the values of caring and respect.

Their children, Donna (Harold) Tanner of Largo, FL, Kathy McManamon of Columbus, OH, and Merle L. (Michelle) Poynter II of Medina, NY, are testaments to Merle and Carol's unwavering love and guidance. He was a cherished and inspirational presence in the lives of his ten grandchildren, Gregory, Christopher, Rebecca, Daniel, Matthew, Samuel, Tiffany, Melanie, Kylie, and Mackenzie; sister, Carol Knisley; brothers, Chuck, Coleman, and Ray Poynter, along with several nieces and nephews, also remember him lovingly.

Merle was preceded in death by his daughter, Susan C. Poynter, and brothers, Cliff and Eugene Poynter, whom he fondly remembered and held dear to his heart.

Merle's dedication to his country was evident in his service in the U.S. Navy, from which he emerged with lasting pride and honor. As an avid sports fan, Merle passionately supported The Ohio State Buckeyes and the Pittsburgh Steelers, reveling in the camaraderie and spirit of the games.

For most of his life, Merle worked as a steelworker and auto mechanic. His entrepreneurial spirit shone as he spent countless hours buying, repairing, and selling cars - a hobby that also spoke to his resourcefulness and technical acumen. Merle's influence extended beyond his immediate circle, touching the lives of many who knew him as a beloved husband, dad, grandpa, and gramps - a man who fostered love, laughter, and learning in every interaction.

Family and friends are invited to reminisce and celebrate Merle's life from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 12, 2025, at Stark Memorial Funeral Home. Please feel free to wear your favorite Ohio State and Pittsburgh Steelers clothing.
