SALEM - Nicholas James Parks, 32, passed away on Tuesday, June 17, 2025. His departure marks the end of a valiant battle with anxiety and depression, a journey he navigated with courage and grace.
Nicholas, affectionately known as "Nick," was born on December 11, 1992, in Youngstown, Ohio, the cherished son of Timothy and Sheila (Moore) Parks.
In his youth, Nick dedicated himself to karate, earning his black belt at the age of 9, setting the precedent for how he would approach life. A 2011 graduate of South Range High School, Nick lettered in football and track and valued the many lasting friendships made with his classmates and teammates and the camaraderie that accompanied. Growing up in the family business at Parks Garden Center, Nick assisted any way he could from mowing, loading, or “picking things up and putting them down” as he would say. Nick found his sanctuary in the great outdoors, whether it was working on the family farm or spending quiet moments in nature, finding comfort in the beauty surrounding him.
Nick's demeanor was one of gentleness and kindness. His sense of humor and compassionate nature was a beacon of comfort to those around him. His magnetic personality attracted people from all walks of life, never passing any judgement and accepting everyone as they were. Passionate about giving back, Nick found joy in helping others. He gave generously of his time, particularly to children's ministries. His volunteer work with The ROC of Salem Youth Center and On Target Outfitters allowed him to make a positive impact on many young lives. Rooted in his faith, Nick was a member of Church at the Center in Salem, and served on its security/parking team, known as the "Sheep Dogs,” loving them all as brothers and spending time on the range with them.
He lived each day by the phrase tattooed on his arm "The Lord is my protector, honor and respect."
Nick enjoyed spending an enormous amount of time with his two nephews Travis and Trevor and shaping them from young boys into principled young men. Whether playing crazy octopus, building legos, and using all sorts of imagination, he was the fun uncle that most people only dream of. A voracious reader, Nick enjoyed getting lost in the pages of a book or any media, often exploring different cultures, delving into history and philosophy, and finding comfort in the Bible. He also enjoyed waterfowl hunting with his dad and "Uncle" Tim Proverbs, gaming, and being present for all the simple things.
Family was the cornerstone of Nick's life, and he always made spending time with them a priority. His happiest moments were when they were all gathered, creating memories that will forever be held dear.
Nick leaves to carry on his memory, his parents, Timothy and Sheila Parks of Salem; his sister, Christa (Tyler) Bates of Salem; paternal grandmother, Norma Parks and maternal grandmother, Darleen Moore, both of Canfield; nephews, Travis and Trevor Bates; aunt, Tina (Jeff) Young of Tampa, FL; uncle, Tony (Tracey) Parks of Canfield; and cousins, Lauren (Cody) Dillon of Canfield, Devon (John) Eich of Oswego, IL, and Ethan (Gina) Parks of Columbiana.
Nick was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Tony Parks Sr. and maternal grandfather, Richard Moore, two of the greatest influences on his life.
Family and friends will be received from 4:00-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at the Greenford Christian Church, 11767 Lisbon Rd., Greenford, Ohio 44422. Friends will be received again at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at the church with a memorial service celebrating Nick's life to follow at 11 a.m. A private burial will be held at Calla Cemetery.
