SALEM-Patricia Kaye Smith, 74, died April 22, 2026, surrounded by family at Salem Regional Medical Center.

Patricia, affectionately known as Pat, was born on March 24, 1952, in New York City, New York, the daughter of the late John and Carmela (Rongo) Gallagher. Raised in New York City, she grew up with a strong sense of determination, independence, and family devotion that would guide her throughout her life. She was a graduate of Cathedral High School, an all-girls private Catholic school, where she developed the discipline and work ethic for which she became known.

Pat’s strong work ethic began at an early age when she worked for New York Bell Telephone Company while still in high school. After graduation, she and her family relocated to Salem, Ohio, where she continued her education at Youngstown Manpower Training Center and completed her certificate in secretarial training. It was at Manpower that she met the love of her life, Thomas J. Smith of Austintown, and the two were married on August 4, 1979, making their home in Salem. Their marriage was built on love, loyalty, and laughter, and together they shared a life centered on family and home.

In addition to being a dedicated wife, mother, and homemaker, Pat worked for A&P Meat Packing and the Navy Recruiting Center in Salem before accepting a position with Canfield Industries as an electronic assembler. Over the next 20 years, she worked her way up to the role of supervisor, a position she held until retiring due to declining health. Pat loved her work and treasured the many friendships she formed along the way.

Pat was also a devoted supporter of veteran’s organizations and was a lifetime member of the Salem VFW and Salem AMVETS Women’s Auxiliary. She served as a past secretary and found great joy in helping prepare for the many lunches and dinners hosted by the organization. Her willingness to serve, organize, and lend a hand reflected the generous spirit she shared so freely with others.

An excellent cook, Pat knew her way around the kitchen and was known for preparing delicious home-cooked meals for her family. Macaroni and potato salad, shrimp stroganoff, and lasagna were among the favorites that brought everyone to the table.

In her leisure time, Pat enjoyed football and bravely cheered on the Michigan Wolverines in Ohio State Buckeyes territory. She also enjoyed watching murder mystery shows, movies starring her favorite actor James Cagney, and listening to music that span all genres. One of her fondest memories from her years in New York City was being present at JFK Airport when The Beatles landed and attending their first concert in the United States.

Nothing brought Pat more joy than being a loving wife, mom, and grandmother. She was her grandchildren’s biggest cheerleader and was present for all their extracurricular activities and milestones. Her title of “Grandma Boop,” lovingly given because of her affection for all things Betty Boop, was her favorite role of all. She embraced family life with wholehearted devotion, and her love and steady presence will be deeply missed by those who knew her best.

She leaves to carry on her memory her husband, Thomas; daughters, Donna (Troy) Adams of Boardman, Ohio, and Jennifer (Gary) Gorby of Salem, Ohio; grandchildren, Riley Adams and Kendall and Dalton Gorby; brother, Bill Gallagher of Salem, Ohio; brother-in-law, Carlton Niven of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; and many cousins.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, John Gallagher.

Pat’s generosity and kindness continued even after her passing through her gift as a Lifebanc donor.

Family and friends will be received from 5-7 p.m., Friday, May 1, 2026, at Stark Memorial Funeral Home, 1014 E. State St., Salem.

Pat's home was made complete with the many cats she rescued over the years.
