BARTLETT, IL - Paul Lawrence Galchick, 95, (formerly of Salem, OH) died Sunday, September 6, 2020 at Swedish Covenant Hospital in Chicago, IL. He was born March 14, 1925 in Clearfield County, PA, son of the late Joseph and Ann (Holenchick) Galchick.
Paul served as a Sergeant in the United States Army Air Corps 38th Bomb Group in the South Pacific during World War II.
While living in Salem, Paul retired as a manager and agent with American General Life Insurance Co. after 23 years. Previously, for 19 years he was a self-employed barber. With his wife Lena, they co-owned a popular teenage dance spot in the 1960s called The Attic. Throughout his life, Paul was a man of deep faith and a member of St. Paul Catholic Parish. He was past President of the Salem-Alliance Life Underwriters Association, Knights of Columbus, life member of VFW Post #892, Past Ohio Civil Defense Corps City of Salem Auxiliary Police, and a past Precinct Committeeman. Paul had a profound love of his family and relished being surrounded by his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He felt at peace on the trout streams in Pennsylvania and blessed in the calm lake fishing in Wisconsin. With a remarkable memory, he delighted in the art of storytelling sharing the past with younger generations. Paul enjoyed the fun of golfing, the fellowship of bowling with “Team Galchick”, rooting for the Cleveland Indians (even in Chicagoland), and watching UK Wildcat basketball and football.
His wife, the love of his life, Lena Marie (DePietro) Galchick whom he was married to for 58 years, preceded him in death in 2005.
Survivors include one son, Larry (Janis) Galchick of Louisville, KY; two daughters, Donna (Thomas) Shriner of Milwaukee, WI, and Debora (Steve) Galchick Taylor of Elgin, IL; nine grandchildren, Tom (Jenny) Shriner of Chicago, IL, Jack (Alisha) Shriner of Seattle, WA, Laura (Justin) Cole of Edgewood, KY, Joe (Jenny) Shriner of New Orleans, LA, Abe (Amy) Shriner of Minneapolis, MN, Michael (Lindsay) Galchick of Cincinnati, OH, Eric Yarnell of Chicago, IL, Elyse (TJ) Yarnell MacMaster of Chicago, IL and Stephen Yanez of Lexington, KY; seven great grandchildren, Zora, McKenna, Leo, Margot, Charlotte, Carson and Lilly.
He is also survived by seven sisters Bertha Stewart, Helen Ellis, Patty Lottman, Audie Syppko, Linda DeRienzo, Kathy Rhodes, Terri Paparodis and two sisters-in-law Lillian Galchick and Amelia Falk.
In addition to parents and wife Lena, Paul was preceded in death by a daughter, Janet M. Galchick (2004), a great granddaughter, Ramona, three brothers, Bill Galchick, Chuck Galchick, Joe Galchick, and a sister, Dorie Bartha. He was also preceded in death by his beloved step-mother, Anna L. Galchick.
Due to COVID-19 concerns, the family held a private graveside service to honor Paul’s life. The private burial was held Saturday, September 12, 2020 at Grandview Cemetery in Salem, OH with Father Robert Edwards officiating. Military honors were provided by Salem Honor Guard.
A private Memorial Mass will be held Friday, September 25, 2020 at St. Robert Roman Catholic Church in Shorewood, WI.
Paul’s care and arrangements have been entrusted to Stark Memorial Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Salem.
