SALEM - Raymond L. Hilliard, 94, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2026, at Auburn Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation. Born on February 6, 1931, Raymond was the cherished son of the late Walter Jr. and Iva Mae (Birkhimer) Hilliard.
A graduate of Salem High School, class of 1949, Raymond began his professional journey as a skilled machinist at Deming Pump Company. His career later took him to Hunt Valve, where he continued to demonstrate his skills. Even in retirement, Raymond found joy in maintaining the beauty of the Salem Hills Golf Club as a groundskeeper, sharing his love for the outdoors with all who visited.
Throughout his life, Raymond was an active member of several associations that reflected his passions and values. He was a longtime member of the Beaver Creek Sportsclub, his commitment to agriculture and community service was evident through his involvement with the National Grange and Perry Grange. As a 4-H member and later an assistant leader, Raymond influenced many young lives, teaching them the importance of leadership and responsibility. His guidance continued as an assistant leader with the Boy Scouts of America, where he helped shape the character and skills of young scouts.
Raymond's love story with his wife, Jeannette Hilliard, was one of enduring partnership and mutual respect. Married on March 25, 1950, they shared a life full of love and laughter until her passing on the exact day two years ago, January 11, 2024. Their bond was a testament to their shared values and commitment to family.
He is survived by one daughter, Mary Nelson of Hanoverton; one son, Wayne Hilliard of Salem; his 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Donald Hilliard of Washington.
Raymond was precededin death by his daughters, Iva Jeanne Handwork and Judith Pesta; two sons, Raymond “Lee” Hilliard and James Hilliard; as well as his sister, Iva Burton.
Private services to honor and celebrate Raymond's life will be held at Grandview Cemetery, where he will be buried.
Arrangements are being handled by Stark Memorial Funeral and Cremation Services.
