Ted R. Hannay, a member of the Salem community and a man of diverse interests and talents, passed away at his residence on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, at the age of 81. Born on November 6, 1942, in Salem, Ohio, Ted was the son of the late Harold and Frances (Richardson) Hannay.
A proud veteran, Ted served in the Navy as a Master-at-arms, a role in which he demonstrated his commitment to discipline and service. Ted was a graduate of Salem High School, and he carried the spirit of his alma mater with him throughout his life.
Professionally, Ted was known for his creativity and leadership as an art director at Salem Label Company, where he also took on the role of press foreman for 30 years.
An avid outdoorsman, he found joy in fishing, hiking, kayaking, camping, gardening, and canoeing. He was also extremely artistic; painting and photography provided him with outlets for his creativity and allowed him to capture the beauty he saw in the world.
A true supporter of local talent, Ted never missed an opportunity to cheer on the Salem sports teams, attending football and basketball games with enthusiasm. His passion for competition extended to the racetrack, where he excelled in Corvette racing, proudly earning 21 trophies over the years. Golf was another of Ted's pleasures, and he could often be found on the greens, perfecting his swing and enjoying the camaraderie of fellow golfers.
Ted's recent membership in the Clan Hannay Society brought him great pride as he traced his heritage back to Scotland, embracing the history and culture of his ancestors. His love for his family was unwavering, and he cherished the moments spent with his loved ones.
A lifelong Cleveland Browns fan, Ted's loyalty to his team was as steadfast as his love for his hometown of Salem. His presence at car shows, where he displayed his prized ‘57 Corvettes, was a highlight for many, and his enthusiasm for racing and automobiles was infectious.
Ted was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Tina Hannay, and his loving son, Chase Hannay. He leaves behind a legacy of love and memories for his daughter, Cara and her husband James, his cherished granddaughter, Lysette, and his sister, Betty Garlock, and her husband, Richard.
