Werner Fitz Obituary

Werner E. Fitz, peacefully passed on March 31, 2024. He was born in Salzburg, Austria, on August 18, 1944.

Werner came to the United States with his parents, Eduard and Gertrude (nee Pauritsch) and his brother, Gerhart in 1951. Initially settling in Texas where he got his nickname Tex, Werner and his family moved to Cleveland, Ohio, and he attended Lady of Lourdes High School. He served in the U.S. Navy and was discharged in 1966. One of his fondest memories was traveling to the Mediterranean Sea.

Werner was employed for 35 years at Republic Steel that later became LTV Steel. He also worked part time at Hans Freightliner.

He married Kathy (Larsen) Fitz in 1967 but they divorced in 1993. Together they have four children. Werner and Kathy still kept in touch all these years. Werner loved taking the family to explore the states, going on camping trips and taking his children fishing. Every year he took the family on summer vacations to Myrtle Beach (which he always found a way to get lost driving every year).

In his spare time (known as Mr. Fix-it) he loved working on cars, always having a cup of black coffee nearby. His most favorite time of the year was Christmas, where he indulged in various family activities. He introduced his love of music that included Elvis Presley to his children. He also loved karaoke, dancing, and had a fondness for both dogs and cats. He couldn't say no when one needed a loving home.

As a resident of Salem, Ohio, he would volunteer through the soup kitchen on occasion. He made many friends in the community, including his grief share group which he truly appreciated. The folks knew him well at the local grocery store as he loved walking around and talking with people.

Werner married Phyllis J. Arnoto in 2000, and became the loving stepfather to Jean and Michael Arnoto, of Salem. Werner was a wonderful stepfather. In fact, the only steps that the family had were the steps in their house. Jean and Michael considered him a father as he loved them like his own. He truly loved and cared for his stepson, Michael, always looking out for his well-being.

Werner is survived by his children, Tim (Nancy), Kathleen (Tim), Keith (Rebecca), and Danielle; 14 grandchildren, one great-grandchild; siblings, Gerhart (Camella), Edward Jr. (Toni), and Ingrid (John), his Aunt Herta; brother-in-law, Benjamin; and sister-in-law Vivian.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis; sister-in-law Nancy; parents, nephew, Gregory, and his Uncle Alfred.

The family ask that donations be made in his memory to East Fairfield United Methodist Church, 45675 state Route 558, New Waterford, Ohio 44445 or to Hospice of the Valley, 9803 Sharrott Road, Poland, Ohio 44514.

To know him was to love him, and everyone truly did.
