SALEM - William T. "Tom" Kerr Sr., 84, a spirited soul known for his kindness, wisdom, and handy work with engines, passed away peacefully on September 23, 2024, in Salem. William, better known as Tom, was born on August 6, 1940, in East Liverpool, the son of the late William F. Kerr Sr. and Jane (Miller) Kerr. Tom was a man whose presence was as robust and unforgettable as the engines he loved to build.
A proud 1958 graduate of East Liverpool High School, Tom carried the values of hard work and dedication throughout his life. His journey was marked by service to his country as a U.S. Army Veteran and later as a member of the National Guard, embodying the spirit of patriotism and commitment.
Tom's professional life was driven by the roar of engines and the open road. As a self-employed independent truck driver, he combined his love for machinery with a strong work ethic, a trait that earned him respect and admiration from all who knew him. His passion for drag racing and engine building was not just a hobby but a significant part of his identity. Tom's expertise in the field led him to work with legendary figures in the drag racing world, including Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins, Jim DeFrank, and Bo Butner, enhancing the performance of their teams with his skillful hands and sharp mind.
Family was the cornerstone of Tom's life. He was a dedicated son to his late parents and a father who instilled values of integrity and perseverance in his children. He is survived by his loving sons, Bill Kerr Jr. of Lisbon, David Kerr and his girlfriend, Courtney Cox of Salem, and his sister, Anna Marie Kerr-Lowther of East Liverpool. His legacy continues through his cherished seven grandchildren, who will remember their grandfather as a towering figure of love and strength. Tom was predeceased by his brother, Donald Kerr, and his aunt, Phyllis Miller, who held a special place in his heart as a second mother after the loss of his own at a young age.
Tom's life was a testament to the power of kindness. He was a man who lent a helping hand without a second thought and imparted wisdom that resonated with those fortunate enough to cross his path. His ability to fix not just engines but the spirits of those around him was a rare gift that made him an unforgettable character in the lives of many.
