William "Willie" Brantingham Obituary

WINONA – William “Willie” George Brantingham, was born on September 13, 1953, in Salem. He was the son of the late George and Edna (Lesch) Brantingham of Winona. Willie passed away peacefully on February 7, 2024, on the home farm at the age of 70.

Willie lived his entire life on the family farm, where his father raised beef cattle and grew corn and cantaloupe. He was the seventh generation to live consecutively on the farm.

Willie graduated from United Local High School in 1971. After graduation, Willie worked for Winona Manufacturing. He entered trade school and became a machinist, which he did for more than 20 years.

In November of 1971, he joined the Winona Fire Department working his way up the ranks and finally becoming chief, retiring from this position in 2013. He also held the position of secretary/treasurer for the department for many years.

Willie was a founding member of the Columbiana County Fire Investigators Association, secretary/treasurer of the Columbiana County Firefighters Association, and county representative for the Ohio State Firefighters Association. With the state association, he served as secretary/treasurer and resolutions chairman and was appointed to the State Emergency Response Commission (SERC). He was first appointed to this position by Governor Taft and continued to service until December of 2022. He was reappointed by Governors Taft, Strickland and Kasich.

He worked for the Columbiana County LEPC (Local Emergency Planning Committee) from March of 2002 until his retirement in December 2019.

On September 9, 2017, Willie was inducted into the United Local Wall of Fame. He was introduced by his daughter, Jenny.

Willie is survived by his wife, Ann (Beresford) Brantingham, whom he married on November 9, 1974. He is also survived by his children, George (Bobbi-Jo) and Julie, all of Winona; Jim of Canton; and Jenny (Kim) Of Columbus. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Carolyn (Stephen) Leyman of Salem; Garrett of Winona; Tegan, Rowan and Levi of Columbus; and a great-grandson, Lane, of Salem. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Lou (Jerry) of Madison; and his mother-in-law, Bonny Beresford of Wellsville; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

He was proceeded in death by his sister, Bette Jeanne, who died in infancy, and his father-in-law, Robert “Brassy” Beresford.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Heartland Hospice for their care. A special thanks to Kayla, Tanya, Courtney, Sara, Chelsea, Tyler, and Josh for all their loving care and help.

A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 6, 2024, at Winona Friends Church on Whinnery Road.
